Drowning is a major cause of fatality in South Africa, especially amongst our children and youth.
Only one South African in seven knows how to swim, and each year about 1,500 people drown, an average of four individuals per day.
The NSRI is committed to changing that. Our nation-wide rescue services and drowning prevention programmes exist entirely to realise our dream of ensuring safe waters for all South Africans.
The NSRI has deployed 1,350 volunteer lifeguards across the country's beaches and installed 1,500 bright pink buoys on various water bodies to help rescuers aid people in distress, NSRI prevention programmes have reached more than 3 million people in recent years.
